Much of my current assignment as a police officer involves educating the public regarding crime trends and crime prevention. I think my website is a great way to reach even more people and hopefully prevent crime in the process. I’ll be changing these tips as time allows.
BEING AWARE OF YOUR SURROUNDINGS
One of the most importants things that you, as an individual, can do to prevent from becoming a crime victim is to be aware of your surroundings.
What that means is that you walk with purpose and with confidence. If you're walking through a parking lot, you're not distracted by your cell phone, or totally oblivious by talking to your friend who is with you. It means paying attention to people who might be loitering near your car or following you out of the store. It means walking in the center of the aisle of cars so that if someone wants to confront you, they'll have to come out more in the open to do so. You also have to have a mental plan what you will do if you are accosted.
If you're in your neighborhood, it means paying attention when you come home at night and actively looking for strange cars or persons hanging around. If you see something that doesn't look right, drive past your house and get a better look. If you see a car, and you're able to do so, jot down the license plate number of the strange car. If there is a person you don't recognize hanging around your street, think of the options open to you should this person approach you. If there is someone else at your home, call them and ask them to come out to meet you.
You even need to be aware of your surroundings in your own home.
If someone comes to your door at night pounding on the door asking to be let in - there is an emergency, tell them you will call the authorities. Remember, most people today have cell phones, so if there is an actual emergency they should be able to call for help themselves. Do not let a stranger in your home!
Another danger spot in your house is a child/teenager on the computer without adult supervision. I'm sure you've all seen the television shows where adult preditors seek out children for their own gratification. As a parent you must be aware of what your child is doing online.
I can't guarantee that by being aware of your surroundings you won't become a crime victim. But I can tell you that the odds of being singled out by a crook drop considerably. Pay attention and be safe!
